Makell Wilcox was engaged this summer to Clint Merrill. When it came time to shoot their engagement portraits they chose to go up Morgan Canyon to Snow Basin, one of the venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics held in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. We went late in the afternoon, but before the sun completely dropped behind the mountains. That way we could do some backlighting — which I love in portrait shots. We stopped in several places on the way up which gave variety to the shoot. Just remember, not every shot has to work. Try as many as you can think of, but limit your shooting to about an hour. And remember, you’re shooting the relationship, not their faces. Make sure to catch some moments when they think you’re not shooting. Or take another photographer with you who can take care of the candids for you!
Here are some of my favorites.
